On 15th July 2016, a girl in her early 20’s was gang raped for the second time by those same five men who had previously assaulted her in 2013. This horrible incident in Rohtak is Tyson’s punch in the face of the judicial system—that rolls at turtle’s pace.
The girl was forced into a car after the perpetrators picked her from outside her college. Then she was drugged and raped while being unconscious– later to be abandoned with her clothes in tatters near Sukhpura Chowk.
After a passer-by had spotted the girl lying behind bushes, he intimated the police from where they drove her to Rohtak Civil Hospital for examination. The five men have been identified as Anil alias Bittu, Raju alias Jagmohan, Sandeep Singh, Mausam Kumar and Aakash. They were booked after a complaint was lodged with the police by the girl. The men are all in their late 20s and former students of the same college as hers.
In 2013, when the incident first took place- out of the five men only two were arrested– and were later released on bail. Sources reported that the girl’s family had been offered Rupees 50 lakhs by the accused for an out of the court settlement, but the latter refused the offer and instead requested the court to move the case to Bhiwani –as they were tired of being constantly intimidated by the perpetrators for years.
How many more cases are needed to break deep sleep of the system– to amend the existing set of laws! Nobody can imagine the horror that girl experienced—and I hope nobody ever encounters something this brutal—but if the system will keep letting criminals get away that easy, such gory incidents will succeed in finding a way to the tabloids.
