Study Reveals A Spider Can Tune His Web To Attract Females And Catch Prey

Researchers at Oxford University made an interesting discovery relating to a spider’s web. The study concluded that a spider could control the web’s tension and stiffness and tune it at different frequencies to attract a mate and catch prey. Just like strings of a guitar, the tuned nodes of the web generate a particular kind of musical pattern which the females can use to determine whether the male is looking for a partner, and ascertain if he is the perfect species. Also, the frequencies help the spider learn when his web is wearing out and needs repairing.

Researchers confirmed that there is a proper mechanism in a spider’s web for directly controlling both the tension and the stiffness of their silk fibres– after they carried out an experiment on a grass cross spider’s web. Measured pulses were sent out through the silk strands of the web and the moment spider sensed the vibrations in his web were disturbed—he was back to fix the amplitude.

Eagerly waiting to see how Marvel Entertainment will feature the recent discovery about ‘the Web’ in the coming Spiderman series.
